The burden of living in a "time on two crosses" (Bayard Rustin)…Some of us are dealing with bittersweet complexities today as trans and queer people of color, whom applaud the monumental victory of DOMA being struck down yet go home to communities of color who must continue to deal with the blatant racism of our voting process, upheld by the SCOTUS ruling against the Voting Rights Act.

I want to punch anyone in the face who is currently going on about "YAY! EQUALITY FOR ALL!" when Native tribes are losing sovereignty, folks are still fighting for reproductive rights, and POC voting rights are at risk.

I'm sure the world is so excited for the big gay weddings that are about to happen but guess what? I'm thinking about the QTPOC who may not even live long enough to fall in love and get married because they're fighting to survive 'till the next day.

So congrats, white folks. Your rights are saved, yet again.

Except not all white people, because white trans* folk, white folks who still do not have legal control over their uteri, and white homeless queers who are worried about survival and not getting married are still in danger/lack control over their own bodies/are erased, ignored, and harmed by the "gay marriage" issue.  

So, yes, white people's rights are saved— If they are also cisgender gay men and in a position where marriage is a feasible possibility and is allowed to be a priority. Or if they are straight white cismen who already had rights to begin with.

Basically, these cries of "Equality for all!" mentioned above

actually apply

to exactly one demographic

white gay/bi/pan cismen have reached their goal (and I guess gay/bi/pan ciswomen too except our bodies belong to the government still, so…)

and not even all of them, 

just those who have the time, money, and safety to be married

pretty sure that's like half a percent of the population.

and it isn't even equality, it's the right to participate in a heteronormative legal contract that originates from the treatment of women as property and reinforces the gender binary.

So really

"YAY! AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEGALLY ASSIMILATE WITH THE MAJORITY, AND A REMOVAL OF LEGAL DISCRIMINATION OR FEDERAL/STATE CONTROL BEYOND WHAT CISHET WHITE MEN FACE, FOR A TINY PORTION OF A WELL-REPRESENTED MINORITY GROUP, AND A STANDSTILL OR SEVERAL STEPS BACKWARD FOR EVERY OTHER OPPRESSED GROUP!"

Oops I made it sound even worse and less "progressive" than the OP made it to begin with. 

so in response to the shitstorm of regressive decisions by SCOTUS yesterday and POC being rightfully upset, you whine about how marginalized white people don’t have it easy? There’s a thing called intersectionality and holy shit maybe you should look into it. That thing where we benefit from being white despite our oppressions? As a white, queer, poor trans woman, shut the fuck up.

And don't even talk to me about how I feel regarding the movement right now. Am I glad DOMA was (kind of, sort of) struck down? Yes. Do I think we should be focusing on that at the expense of trans*women of color who are living on the streets, and who literally took the blows for us and started the fucking riot that we still celebrate every NY Pride?
